Quantum Computing - In small words from a curious mind

In the times of the current global pandemic l am aghast at the helplessness the world is in, to find a credible cure. It takes way too long to develop a drug or a vaccine for saving the world from the new age misery. A new drug would typically take 10 to 15 years to progress from discovery to launch and would cost around $2 billion. Moreover, only 1 in 10 such endeavors would yield fruitful result. Biopharma companies heavily rely on few blockbuster drugs to fund the huge expense involved in R&D. On an average, industry spends around $180 billion on such efforts. Are there technologies that could speed up the process and increase the success rate?. One of the strongest possible candidates which is revolutionizing the biopharma world is Quantum computing. Quantum computing has the potential to transform virtual screening through physically precise modeling of drug-target interactions and screening of massive virtual libraries. This way we could simulate interaction of molecule...

Disaster Management for the Family

Do we know what to do when all the mobile towers are jammed, electricity cut , water supply dried out. When I watch the perils of earth quake hit Haiti this is exactly what is happening. For a moment let us think of our lifestyle which is driven by the convenience of 24 hr ATMs, mobile phones, super markets etc which has made us heavily dependent on these amenities. Mind you, all these are liable to be out of service, most often than not, all at once when a disaster strikes in the form of flood, storm, Tsunami, earthquake etc. The first urban human reaction during a calamity is to pick up the phone and try calling the family whereever they are. The phone would be useless because lines would all be chocked up. This exponentially increases the panic and people will suddenly realise how helpless we are in this age of cutting edge technology. Such are the times when we go back to our basis. The good old wisdom of having some money, non perishable food (grains, dried fruits etc), an emergen...

Copenhagen Summit - What's the fuzz about ?

Last few weeks while I flipped the Tv channel during ad breaks of the movie reruns I came across this terribly disturbed people in Copehagen. What's the fuzz about ? What are they clamouring about ? I asked around to get enlightened about this piece of world affair. I could not get past than hearing that it is a climate summit of some sort ? I decided to get to the bottom of this and crack the case myself - worth an effort considering lot of people talk about it (superficially). Here is the synopsis from my case dairy.... 193 countries have sent there representatives to this Copenhagen climate summit (I wonder how many countries are there in the world in total...) What were they talking about...... They were discussing how much carbon dioxide and other green gases should be produced by the nations around the world. Well, if you are wondering who is the culprit who emits these undesirable gases - it is you and me, along with rest of the people, animals, vehicles through deforestati...
