Copenhagen Summit - What's the fuzz about ?

Last few weeks while I flipped the Tv channel during ad breaks of the movie reruns I came across this terribly disturbed people in Copehagen. What's the fuzz about ? What are they clamouring about ? I asked around to get enlightened about this piece of world affair. I could not get past than hearing that it is a climate summit of some sort ? I decided to get to the bottom of this and crack the case myself - worth an effort considering lot of people talk about it (superficially).

Here is the synopsis from my case dairy....

193 countries have sent there representatives to this Copenhagen climate summit (I wonder how many countries are there in the world in total...)

What were they talking about......

They were discussing how much carbon dioxide and other green gases should be produced by the nations around the world.

Well, if you are wondering who is the culprit who emits these undesirable gases - it is you and me, along with rest of the people, animals, vehicles through deforestation, industrial emission, over consumption etc. We cannot avoid this but it has to be limited. - The summit was trying to arrive at a consensus as to how much ? One strong suggestion in the talk was to reduce the emissions by half, come year 2050. ( My older daughter will be 47 years old by then).

Another important questions that was addressed was who is going to pay how much for helping the poorer nations to shift away from usage of fossil fuels to abate the CO2 and green house gas emission ? They also need money to build sea walls and tackle droughts that will result from the climate change.

The rich industrialized nations will have to dole out more money than their poorer cousins. It is logical as the industrialized nations has over consumed more than their fair share of natural resources and fossil fuel. The UN has called for $10 billion annually in the next three years. The European Union has pledged $3.6 billion a year. It's still unknown how much other wealthy nations, such as the U.S. and Japan, will contribute. The UN says much higher amounts will be needed in 10 years.

Finally what happened in the summit....

Many call it a disappointing outcome considering the grave problem in hand. After two weeks of frantic negotiations, the 193-nation conference ended on 19 Dec 2009 delegates merely taking note of the deal.

It includes a recognition to limit temperature rises to less than 2C and promises to deliver $30bn (£18.5bn) of aid for developing nations over the next three years.

The agreement outlines a goal of providing $100bn a year by 2020 to help poor countries cope with the impacts of climate change.

It also includes a method for verifying industrialized nations' reduction of emissions.

So much so about the Copenhagen summit .. But be aware of your responsibility to reduce your personal carbon foot print.

Switch off that light you let on in your bedroom while you came to watch the TV.....
